Unlicensed Carrier WiFi

Unlicensed Carrier WiFi:

Evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG):

Today’s mobile users are accustomed to accessing their streaming content services on a device and location of their choosing. Whether at home, in the workplace or in public hotspots, subscribers want a consistent user experience and access to their cloud based content. Studies have shown that 70% of mobile data usage today occurs indoors over WiFi radios. With the recent success of Apple’s iPhone6 and other devices, users can now place native Voice over WiFi calls using a single number and dialer. This service also offers access to CALEA and standard supplementary calling features like voice messaging.

As a result, mobile operators are looking to WiFi offload as a low cost approach to boosting indoor voice coverage. Casa Systems ePDG is a high performance solution that enables mobile operators to provide secure access to their LTE/EPC networks from “untrusted” non-3GPP WiFi access networks. It provides an attractive approach to regain control of the user experience while seamlessly integrating with existing policy, billing and operator services.

WiFi Integration with LTE/EPC Networks

Additionally, Casa’s ePDG can be combined with Casa’s SCG to offer a broad, integrated solution for addressing licensed and unlicensed small cell applications in the home or enterprise.

Fixed broadband integration of WiFi-attached user terminals requires support for the IPSEC/IKEv2 security protocols. Casa’s ePDG provides industry-leading support for millions of IPSEC attached devices while also providing optimized voice grade latency performance for call handling in milliseconds.

Casa Systems ePDG provides the ideal high performance security solution for mobile operators to integrate WiFi into their mobile core networks with many attractive value-adds such as:

  • High density support for up to 2M WiFi attached user devices
  • High signaling with support for establishing thousands of IPSEC/IKEv2 connections per-second
  • EAP-SIM and EAP-AKA authentication for SIM-based access devices
  • EAP-TLS/TTLS authentication for non-SIM devices
  • QoS consistency across cellular-to-WiFi hand-offs with QCI-to-DSCP mapping
  • IKEv2 NAT Traversal in cases where there is a NAT between the UE terminal and ePDG
  • DOS prevention features including IKEv2 cookie challenge for preventing half-open sessions and dropping malformed IPSEC/IKEv2 packets
